Nokia releases revised Android 11 update roadmap (Update)

Nokia 9 PureView Review

Update: May 10, 2021 (1 AM ET): After Nokia tweeted an Android 11 update schedule and then deleted it back in October 2020, a company staffer has now published a new roadmap in its community forums.

The Nokia 8.3 5G and Nokia 3.2 received the Android 11 update in Q1 2021. The 4.2, 2.2, 2.3, and 8.1 are next in line to receive the update. The Nokia 3.4, 5.3, 5.4, 1 Plus, 1.3, 1.4, and 2.4 will now receive the update in Q2 2021. Finally, Nokia has earmarked Q3 2021 for the Nokia 6.2, 7.2, and 9 Pureview’s update releases.

Nokia notes that due to the nature of update rollouts, not all customers will receive the updates immediately after launch. Additionally, not all regions will receive them simultaneously, either. That said, this should give current Nokia users a better idea of when to expect Android 11 on their devices.

Original article: September 28, 2020 (01:30 PM ET): You may have to be patient before your Nokia phone gets its Android 11 update. NeoWin reports that HMD Global briefly posted its Android 11 roadmap for Nokia phones, and it’s bad news for some owners if it holds.

The schedule suggests the Nokia 2.2, 5.3, 8.1, and 8.3 5G will get the Android 11 update first, in the fourth quarter of 2020. Most of the eligible phones would get their upgrades in the first quarter of 2021, including the Nokia 1.3, 2.3, 2.4, 3.2, 3.4, 4.2, 6.2, and 7.2. That’s relatively late, but not unheard of.

However, you’ll have to be particularly patient with two stand-out phones. According to the news, the no-frills Nokia 1 Plus and the camera-centric Nokia 9 Pureview won’t get their upgrades until the second quarter of 2021 — half a year after Android 11 first reached devices. This wouldn’t be completely surprising given the comparative age of the devices, but might be frustrating when Google’s latest OS will have been on Pixel phones for several months by that point.

The roadmap is in line with the age of the phones, some of which (such as the 2018-era Nokia 8.1) would be two or more years old by the time Android 11 is available. It would cut off a wave of handsets, including the inaugural Nokia 1 and the premium Nokia 8 Sirocco.

Don’t be shocked if the timing changes. It’s not certain why HMD Global deleted its roadmap post, and there might be tweaks to the schedule. If it’s reasonably accurate, though, it will take a while before every qualifying phone is using the newest software.
