Exynos 2200 (with AMD GPU) could be an M1 competitor by coming to laptops, too

  • A new report suggests we could see Samsung’s next flagship chipset — likely the Exynos 2200 — launch in laptops this year.
  • This new chip would be Samsung’s first with an AMD GPU.
  • It’s likely Samsung wants to position the chip as a competitor to Apple’s M1 by using it across multiple lines.

Earlier this year, Samsung confirmed that we would see the fruit of its partnership with AMD at some point in 2021. This Exynos-branded processor would, theoretically, be Samsung’s most powerful yet. AMD’s graphics processing would likely be superior to ARM’s Mali.

Now, according to a report from The Korea Economic Daily, Samsung could be planning to launch this new processor in a laptop. Since it’s all but certain the chipset — likely branded as the Exynos 2200 — would land in smartphones and tablets, this rumor suggests Samsung could be gunning for Apple’s M1 strategy of having one chip for everything.

The report contends that Samsung could be planning to launch a Windows-powered laptop in the second half of this year. This laptop would have the Exynos 2200 inside, which would make it an ARM-based system. This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung’s launched an ARM-based laptop — the Galaxy Book S has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Cx inside. However, this would be the first time Samsung would use the same chip to power a laptop and its smartphones.

However, we don’t expect to see a Samsung phone launch this year with the Exynos 2200 onboard. It’s possible the company could use the Samsung Galaxy S22 launch for that. This ARM-powered laptop, though, could help give us an idea of what we might be able to expect for future phones powered by the chip.
