Thief steals phone thinking it’s a OnePlus 9 Pro, returns it to victim
- An Indian journalist’s phone was allegedly stolen and then returned to him by the thief.
- The thief apparently said he thought the device was a OnePlus 9 Pro.
Having your smartphone stolen can be one of the most inconvenient things around, as people often keep their entire lives on these devices. Chances are good that you might not see your phone again, but at least one thief reportedly decided to return a snatched device.
Legal journalist Debayan Roy tweeted on Monday (h/t: MySmartPrice) that a thief snatched his Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus in Noida, India and made a run for it, with Roy in hot pursuit. But the thief then decided to turn around and run back to him.
“Bhai mujhe laga OnePlus 9 Pro model hai [Bro, I thought it was a OnePlus 9 Pro],” the thief told the journalist, before dropping the phone on the floor and running again.
Roy has dismissed user replies suggesting this was a marketing stunt for OnePlus. So it certainly sounds like at least one thief is genuinely on the lookout for a new OnePlus phone to steal, which would still be a PR win of sorts for the Chinese manufacturer.
Amazon India notes that the next OnePlus 9 Pro sale is set to go live on April 15 at midday IST. So you might want to act fast if you’re keen on the new device.
